LAST MONTH, LEADERS FROM NATIONAL AND LOCAL GOVERNments as well as from businesses met in Bonn, Germany, to discuss ways of implementing the 2015 Paris climate agreement. Even though the U.S. federal government has decided not to support the Paris accords, U.S. state and local officials and business executives attended the conference to support the goals of the agreement.
The Manufacturing Leadership Council, too, has stepped forward. At its annual meeting in June, the Council’s Board of Governors decided to elevate Sustainability to one of the Council’s "Critical Issues" for 2018, a declaration that the issue is real and urgent and one that industry, which contributes about 21% of total greenhouse gas emissions in the U.S., has a responsibility to address. This edition of the ML Journal provides a package of thought-leading articles about the important subject of sustainability.
In a poll on sustainability, our first, we chart sustainability goals and objectives, strategies, and technologies. One of the key findings is that an overwhelming majority of respondents, 71%, say the Trump Administration’s withdrawal from the Paris accord will have no impact on their own sustainability activities.
